So how can you re-invent your business and go into a niche? Well the answer is simple really. You can start by targeting a sub-set of your current target market. So if you’re a fitness gym owner, you can focus your gym around helping women lose weight. In fact there’s actually a gym like that in my neighborhood; it’s called “Curves”.

Or, you can take your fitness gym and focus solely on people who weigh over 200 pounds, and wants to start shedding weight immediately. You could operate your gym similar to the program, “The Biggest Loser”. Offer prizes for the top “losers”, and do things each day to help these people remain motivated towards achieving their goal.

Did you just see how I carved out 2 sub-niches from a general business category? You can do the same. You’re prospects and customers will feel as if you know what they’re going through, and will come back to you over and over again until they finally attain their goal. With that being said, I think it’s more than important to carve out a niche for yourself so that you can improve your overall costs of staying in business.

Niche marketing is the key, and don’t let anyone tell you differently. If you want to make more money in your business within the next couple of months, do your research on how you can carve out a niche for yourself. Go online and search in discussion boards or forums to see what the main problems that people are having.

Going back to the fitness gym example, another way to separate yourself from your competitors is to offer a 24-hour gym. This is great for people who have to work mornings, and who normally wouldn’t be able to attend a fitness gym because they close relatively early. I know of a gym called the “Rush Gym” that is open for 24 hours, and they get a lot of members because of it.

Niche marketing can make you very profitable, and don’t let anyone tell you differently.

In this case each “move” should be one month. Therefore you should have been thinking about your Valentines, or February promotions as you fall asleep after your big Turkey dinner.

There are a few reasons why you need to have your promotions figured out that early.

Getting Promo Out Takes Time.

By having it all worked out months in advance you give yourself enough time for the logistics. Getting the concept down, getting artwork put together, printing, and mailing all have to be done and this can take several weeks from being an idea in your head to being a piece of promo in your customers hands. You are also going to want to have the piece in your customers’ hands at least 2 weeks before the sale or event.

Get the Message Out Multiple Times.

Getting your promo out early lets you drive your message home through repetition. Take Christmas for example. If you start mailing to your customers in the beginning of November, you will be able to cement your company name in their head because you will be able to mail to them multiple times before they have to make their Holiday purchases. On the other hand if you start mailing to them in late November or Early December you will not have the time to do multiple mailings. Getting one mailing out at that stage will still be much better than not sending anything at all, but nothing works better when promoting than multiple mailings with the same message to the same list.

Free Up Time for Running Your Business.

Most people who own a business do their own marketing. Thankfully marketing is one of the few things in a business that you can do far in advance. By scheduling your holiday promotions ahead of time you will make yourself available to wear all of the other hats that you do around your business.

Many small businesses don’t have huge budgets for their marketing but still want to get real results. There are two questions important to most businesses before they start a marketing campaign.

Frankly, both questions are fairly easy to answer. For small businesses with a limited budget, some marketing methods are ruled out right away.

These include: Television, radio and billboard. The good news is, these marketing mediums aren’t appropriate for a small business with a certain limited target market anyway! This is simply because they target large numbers of people over a large geographic area, rather than a specific group of people in a certain area of a city (for example).

So the results are narrowed down for us and will tend to be more effective for small businesses anyway.

These methods include:

1) Direct Mail

2) Website

3) Newspaper and Magazine Advertising

4) Cold Calling

5) Print Collateral

6) Email Marketing

All of the above methods can and do work for hundreds of thousands of small businesses all around the world. So, which is right for you?

That depends, for example, many people hate cold calling. The thought of picking up a telephone and trying to ‘sell’ a stranger makes them break out into a cold sweat, wake up in the middle of the night shivering and shaking and feeling sick to their stomach. However, if you don’t mind the thought of cold calling, it can be a fantastic way of generating business, especially if you’re selling personal services. With a bit of knowledge and the law of averages, you’ll be able to generate business fairly quickly and cheaply.

Direct mail is a very effective tool if used correctly. If you have built up a list of contacts and they are the type of people who will be interested or have bought the type of product or service you sell, you’ll have a good chance of getting a solid response. Of course, much direct mail is shipped to a certain zip or area code and could be mistaken for junk mail. It’s easier to send to many, but cheaper and smarter to send to a targeted list.

Print Collateral such as brochures and corporate identity pieces (letterhead, business cards etc.) are a good way to let people know who you are without being abrasive or in your face. Make sure you follow up after people look at your print pieces because many times, even if they like what you represent, they won’t bother to get in touch.

Newspaper and magazine advertising can work well if a) the creative is well done and b) you’ve included your ad in the right publication. Magazine and newspaper publications can be a cost effective marketing choice because there are so many different publications to choose from. Obviously, small businesses are unlikely to advertise in a national paper because of cost but there are still many options.

Email Marketing is an effective approach to lead generation if it is done well. Take time to build a good list, make sure you are sending people something of value in your communications and balance your sales emails with informational emails. Don’t blast people with three or four a week or they’ll see you as a nuisance.

A website is a bare minimum these days but if well thought-out, it can generate many new leads. Give consumers all of the information they’ll need to make an informed decision about your company and be sure to talk about issues the reader will find important.

The choice is yours in terms of what sort of marketing to choose, but I will suggest you pick no more than two or three methods and just give them a go. You have a lot to gain if they succeed.
